Canton & Avon
17th House District
I take every opportunity to visit schools in Avon and Canton to read to students, and I enjoy welcoming students visiting the Capitol. I have strongly advocated to keep local control of education with the towns of Canton and Avon. I have also proposed and supported new laws that create safer learning environments for our students.
My office has remained busy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, assisting Avon and Canton's residents with the state's unemployment compensation system, answering questions regarding reopening protocols for local businesses, responding to concerns about our schools, special education, nursing homes, and access to health care. I have also worked to distribute masks to frontline workers and local nonprofits. Even though we haven't been able to have our regularly scheduled office and coffee hours, I am always available to answer your questions.
The pandemic continues to take a toll on our state’s already unstable financial climate. I proposed a new law calling for zero-based budgeting to drive cost-savings, and for greater transparent reporting on quasi-public agency spending. I also called for a new law requiring public hearings on audit reports of any agency seeking a budget increase.
The state will be forced to make budget cuts, and some plans call to achieve savings by canceling previously approved tax relief. I will continue to fight proposed tax increases and support policies that allocate state resources in a prioritized way.
